A third space is defined as a playful, social space outside of the home or workplace that is free from expectations of productivity, promotes conversation, and connects people through the exchange of knowledge. Through the back-and-forth movement of ideas, these spaces help us build both individual and collective identities and promote psychological well-being. As an individual, I’ve found connection and joy in these spaces. But with the rise of digital isolation and the commodification of authenticity, third spaces are disappearing. When these spaces
no longer exist or exist with the intention to sell something, we lose the value of sharing our experiences and learning from others. As a designer, I worry about how my work could perpetuate this trend. In my thesis I challenge this commodification to create a true third space.

Take Part, Make Whole: Designing Spaces for Interchange builds spaces for people to share their experiences and explores the role of the designer as facilitator. I prioritize using design to create spaces and work that connects people in spite of capitalism. What role does the graphic designer play in helping others connect to themselves and each other? How does community participation bring value to our work and ourselves? How can I use design to create human connections rather than sell a product? I investigate shared experience and community through:

  1. Participation in my work from classmates, friends, and the community
  2. Exchanging information, ideas, and experiences
  3. Synthesizing these elements

The project manifests as a collection of design experiments using community responses. I aim to first create a connection between myself and my participants, and then between us and the world. At its heart, Take Part, Make Whole aims to serve as a safe space for connection, conversation, and healing.
